The Indian Temple Mound & Museum links a late-prehistoric culture to present-day Fort Walton Beach

 | May 10, 2013 8:56 am

Twelve hundred years ago, there was no city of Fort Walton Beach. The area where it now stands, however, was inhabited by a late-prehistoric culture of mound-building Indians who disappeared with the arrival of the first Europeans.

Known only by their place in a long archaeological timeline, these “Mississippi Era” peoples thrived throughout the southeastern, midwestern and eastern United States from approximately 800 A.D. to 1400 A.D. One of their colonies existed for a time on the Emerald Coast, and the lives of these early coastal dwellers are examined at the City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center.

All bridal couples have a unique story about their “big day.”

 | May 6, 2013 8:45 am

Of all the big days we celebrate in life – the first kiss, getting a driver’s license, graduating college, starting a career – the wedding day tops them all.

Planning that big day can be so consuming that it takes as much time as a full-time job. Invitations, location, flowers. The vows, the theme, the wedding photographer, the cake. And for goodness’ sake, the most important decision – the dress! It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

 | May 4, 2013 8:39 am

To Walton County Sheriff Mike Adkinson and his wife, Erin, their 8-year-old daughter Annabelle was the picture of health. She loved playing outside at their DeFuniak Springs home and doing stunts on her scooter.

“She is fearless on that thing,” says Erin Adkinson.

In the fall of 2008, the energetic Annabelle became ill with what her parents thought was a stomach virus. But her vomiting continued for hours until her small body was limp and gaunt.

Natural Products and Methods Keep a House Clean Without the Toxic Side Effects

The lemony scent of a magnolia blossom and the sweet sound of native songbirds signal the arrival of springtime on the Emerald Coast. Southern hospitality is alive and well, but with the joy of entertaining comes the responsibility of getting the house in order. This year is the perfect time to put a little twist on spring cleaning and “go green.”

Combing through the many eco-friendly articles on the Internet, I was surprised by the sheer simplicity of green cleaning. It is nothing more than reverting back to yesteryear, the simple life and using the products, tools and methods from our grandparents’ generation to tidy our homes. In fact, it’s so straightforward that you will find yourself saying, “I knew that.”

This all-american comfort food features versatile cooking styles and a variety of picnic-perfect flavors

 | April 27, 2013 7:57 am

Barbecue is a highly personal thing. From the way you spell it (bar-b-cue, bar-b-que or barbecue) to the way you cook it (smoked, grilled or both) and the way you eat it (wet or dry, spicy or sweet) depends on individual preferences – not to mention a telltale allegiance to your place of birth.
